Rescued pangolins give birth in Vietnam

Two Sunda pangolins rescued by authorities and taken to the Vinpearl River Safari Nam Hội An Wildlife Rescue Center have given birth.

The Vinpearl River Safari Nam Hội An Wildlife Rescue Center (VinWonders Nam Hội An), near Hội An in the former Quảng Nam province, now part of Đà Nẵng city, said the two pangolins were handed over by the police of the former Nam Giang district (in August 2022) and the forest protection unit of the former Tiên Phước district (in December 2023). Both animals were cared for and gave birth in late January 2023 and mid-May 2024, respectively.

When they arrived, both pangolins were in poor health after being caught in snares, trafficked and transported in harsh conditions. The center's veterinarians treated their wounds and assessed their nutritional status. Their diet was adjusted to meet their nutritional needs, including a variety of insects and essential supplements.

The pangolins were then housed in an enclosure that mimics their natural habitat, with soil, vegetation and hiding places to help them feel safe and comfortable. The care team monitors them continuously and carries out regular health checks.

According to the center, once the young pangolins have grown, it will work with the authorities of the former Quảng Nam province to release both mother-and-baby pairs back into the wild.

The Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica) is listed in Group IB of endangered, precious and rare animals and is threatened with extinction. Pangolins are on Vietnam's list of endangered, precious and rare species that receive the highest level of legal protection. The animal has hard scales that protect its body and a sticky tongue that can extend up to 40 centimeters to feed on ants and termites. When threatened, a pangolin can roll itself up into a ball. They are hunted for their scales and meat. Hunting, trading or consuming pangolins is illegal and can lead to criminal prosecution.
