Strange sight: peach tree blossoms at the start of autumn

A peach tree blooming in autumn in the garden of Mr. Dương Xuân Nam (in the former Sóc Sơn district on the northern outskirts of Hà Nội) has drawn widespread attention after he posted photos of it on his personal Facebook page.

Nam said peach trees normally flower in spring, but to his surprise, when he woke up this morning he found his tree in bloom in autumn.

According to Professor Lê Trần Bình, former director of the Institute of Biotechnology (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), flowers or fruit appearing out of season is "nothing strange," because plants are responding to "abnormal" climate conditions.

"The white lilies at my house usually bloom around 30 April or 1 May, but this year they flowered in June and July. Many other plants show similarly unusual signs," Professor Bình said.

The professor added that such unusual changes show that climate change is having a tremendous impact on nature. However, it also gives gardeners an opportunity to induce plants to flower and fruit out of season to serve people's needs.

A plant expert at the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology likewise attributed the phenomenon to changing weather. "If this is a natural phenomenon with no human intervention, it shows that the weather and climate are clearly changing," he said.
